One of Everton’s most impressive pieces of business last summer was the loan signing of Barcelona youngster Gerard Deulofeu.
It was a signing which signalled a change in the blue half of Merseyside, as former boss David Moyes wouldn’t have dreamed of signing such a player whereas Roberto Martinez and his reputation for flowing football made it an easy decision for Barcelona and their young star.
The Spanish U21 star has enjoyed a fruitful spell at Goodison Park, despite being ruled out for five weeks with a hamstring injury picked up in December.
His return from injury coincided with Everton’s excellent form in March, where the Toffees picked up five Premier League wins out of five to close the gap on fourth place Arsenal in the race for that last Champions League spot.
Boss Roberto Martinez has been happy with his Deulofeu’s return, and in an interview with Spain’s Al Primer Toque football programme, he believes Barcelona have a player on their books with potential worldclass talent.
“Everyone that has seen him play knows that he has natural talent. He has an ability to move unbalanced, and I’m convinced he will be a worldlcass star.” He said, quoted by Spanish press Mundo Deportivo.
The 20-year-old attacking player is fully expected to return to Goodison Park next season following Barcelona’s recent transfer ban being uplifted.
Deulofeu has started six of Everton’s last eight Premier League matches, and over the season he has scored three goals with a further three assists.
