5 Chelsea stars named in Champions League team of week

Chelsea dominated this week’s UEFA Champion's League Team of the Week following the club's excellent defensive display at Atletico Madrid.

Although Chelsea may have been criticized by much of the media for their defensive approach in Spain this week in that 0-0 draw against Atletico Madrid in the semi-final of the Champions League, UEFA knows a fine performance when it sees one.

As a result of Chelsea’s defensive masterclass at the Vicente Calderon stadium (during which Chelsea restricted Diego Costa, arguably the world’s best centre-forward on current form, to a small number of half chances, UEFA seleced five Chelsea players – based on a rating out of 10 - for the Champions League semi-final team of the week.

Here's the Chelsea players who made it:

Mark Schwarzer: 5.8

The 41-year-old Australian international came on for the injured Petr Cech within the first twenty minutes. Although rarely tested, he communicated well with his back four and was named the best goalkeeper of the round.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 6.0

The Spanish fullback played out of position at right-back due to the suspension of Branislav Ivanovic.

Chelsea's Azpilicueta was steady throughout, and coped with the impressive Luis Filipe and Koke partnership down Atletico Madrid’s left flank with relative ease.

Gary Cahill: 6.0

The England international centre-back was named the best centre-back of the round after an almost flawless display.

Charged with dealing with Diego Costa, Cahill didn’t allow the €60m-rated to settle on the ball, and he coped well with the striker’s aerial threat.

John Terry: 5.8

Alongside Cahill, Chelsea captain John Terry used his experience well to snuff out the Atletico Madrid dangermen and contributed with a number of vital blocks.

Unfortunately for the 33-year-old, however, his night was cut short and he will face a battle to be fit for next week’s return leg at Stamford Bridge.

David Luiz: 6.0

The final Chelsea player to be included into the UEFA XI is defender David Luiz.

The Brazilian international was deployed as a holding midfielder by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, and it turned out to be yet another excellent decision by the Portuguese boss as Luiz broke up Atletico Madrid’s passing game without giving away any free-kicks in dangerous areas.
