Cameroonian international midfielder Alex Song was a big hit at Arsenal before making his protracted big-money move to Barcelona in the summer of 2012.
After six years at the Emirates, the Gunners’ supporters were aggrieved to see another talented player follow in the footsteps of Cesc Fabregas and move to the Nou Camp.
Unfortunately for Song, his Catalan adventure hasn’t been quite what he hoped for as he has had to play second-fiddle to a star-studded Barcelona midfield which includes former Arsenal poster boy Cesc Fabregas.
Even with the ageing Xavi, the sale of Thiago last summer and Iniesta occasionally playing out-wide, Barcelona appear to be placing their midfield future in the hands of Sergi Roberto rather than giving the former Arsenal midfielder an extended run in the team.
Alex Song has since been linked with a move away from the club – with Manchester United and a return to Arsenal listed as possible destinations.
The Red Devils are keen to bolster their midfield ranks this summer, and a dominant player who has certainly picked up excellent passing skills over the past two years would be the perfect signing.
With regards to signing the player, if Barcelona fans have any influence over the next few months, Manchester United may be in luck.
According to a recent poll in the Spanish newspaper Marca, 79.7% of the participants have voted in favour of selling the 26-year-old this summer.
In a campaign where Barcelona will ultimately win none of the major trophies, Alex Song has made just 12 La Liga starts – less than half of Cesc Fabregas’ total.
Should Manchester United or Arsenal make a bid this summer, the likelihood of him returning to the Premier League is high as a result of the guaranteed first-team football which both clubs have to offer.
