The top five players linked with signing for Tottenham Hotspur this week: Carrick, Welbeck and more

Carrick

Manchester United, FC Schalke, Celtic and Cagliari stars all feature.

This summer could produce a lot of exciting changes for Tottenham Hotspur fans which could give the side a better crack at getting into the top four next season.

There are plenty of questions to be answered with the main one being whether Tim Sherwood will keep his position as head coach. That will determine which players Spurs have a realistic chance of signing as they continue to be linked with some top players.

Here are five of the best from the past week.

Michael Carrick (Manchester United)

Spurs were linked with a highly unrealistic deal for Michael Carrick earlier in the week. He knows the club well having played for them before but he’s one of United’s most important midfielders and despite the need for change at Old Trafford, it will still be hard for Tottenham to do a deal.

Danny Welbeck (Manchester United)

Welbeck could well be on the move this summer as Manchester United could bring in another attacking option, which could push the forward further down the pecking order. He seems to be eager to play in a central role over a position on the left hand side of United’s midfield.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (FC Schalke)

A potentially more realistic striker option for the club. Now 30-years-old, the Dutchman guarantees experience and he could jump at the chance to play in the Premier League before he retires. However, should he become available, there will be a lot of interest for him.

Fraser Forster (Celtic)

Forster has been in great form this season, which should see him secure a place in Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad for this summer. He’s a potential replacement for Hugo Lloris should the Frenchman decide to leave the club and head back to Ligue One with PSG reportedly interested.

Davide Astori (Cagliari)

Tottenham’s need for defensive reinforcements has been routinely shown this season, as Sherwood has had to contend with injuries over the second half of the campaign. One of the main problems for the boss has been not having enough experienced options when his key players have been unavailable. Astori is a good option.
