Yeovil Town defender Byron Webster has been linked with a move to Elland Road but is he really what McDermott needs?
According to the Western Gazette, Yeovil's local newspaper, Leeds United are looking at the Glovers' star centre-back Byron Webster with a view to a free transfer in the summer.
The Somerset-based club put up a good fight against relegation despite their budget, however, with 2 games remaining they sit dead-bottom in the league. Nevertheless, the methodology behind their football has been first-class and rarely did they play like a side that would finish bottom of the pile.
Upon their inevitable confirmation of relegation, the Yeovil Town manager, Gary Johnson, has been talking to the Gazette and admits it could be a big summer of change at the club.
'We will get this game out the way because it’s important they focus on the games,' Johnson said.
'We haven’t yet sat down as a staff and worked out who will be with us and who won’t.
'There will be some out of contract that we still want to be here and some in contract we don’t want to be here. Those players will have will have to find a club over the summer, otherwise they will find themselves here on contract and not playing. We haven’t put those names on our list yet.
'I can’t give you an exact percentage but there will be a significant number that will go anyway because they will be either out of contract or going to pastures new.
'We’re going back to League One so we have got to rebuild because that’s natural. It’s probably more than 50 per cent that we want to keep.'
One of the players rumoured to be leaving is centre-defensive giant Byron Webster who is reportedly a target for Leeds United. However, as fans debate whether he is what the club need - here are three other questions that arose through his speculation.
Who is making the decisions on which players to target?
When the Cellino interest came to light there was a number of players in Italy linked with moves to Elland Road, similar to the situation at Watford. However, the speculation regarding Webster confuses the situation even more as he clearly isn't a Cellino signing. Does this mean Brian McDermott is still planning for next season, and does it mean Cellino is willing to give him a free run to bring in whoever he wants? It does seem unlikely, especially after the deadline day fiasco.
Which centre-back should start emptying his locker?
Leeds United seems to be home of under-achieving centre-backs at the minute and this has lead to more than the minority of supporters being frustrated. Although Jason Pearce has had a respectable season, Tom Lees and Scott Wootton have been quite poor throughout and Zaliukas having made a strong start faded not long after. If Webster is to sign for Leeds, it means that one of the current centre-backs is likely to leave in the summer - but which one?
Does this signify low spending in the future?
Cellino, according to reports, is a very wealthy man and has admitted to wanting to take Leeds United to the next level. He has a history of hiring and firing managers in Italy and success seems to be the bare minimum the Italian expects. Nevertheless, Byron Webster does come across as a strange target for the Yorkshire club as they plan an assault on the top 6 next season. The 27-year-old has had a good season, which he has left a good account of himself but, in my opinion, he isn't a player that is the difference between 2nd and 3rd, or even 6th and 7th. I just don't believe he will improve Leeds that much, especially considering their aspirations.
Here is what the Leeds United fans had to say on Twitter...
