Suarez only has 'words of gratitude' for Gerrard - another reason to thank the Reds' skipper?

Steven Gerrard Doing A Luis Garcia

It could have been very different...

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has singled out captain Steven Gerrard for the treatment he showed towards the Uruguayan at the start of the season.

The summer was a turbulent one involving Liverpool and Suarez. After receiving a ten game ban for biting at the end of last season, he tried to force a move away from Anfield in a bid to play Champions League football.

Suarez is quoted in The Guardian, saying of Gerrard: “He helped me during the summer and I have only words of gratitude for all he did and he will be always present as an important person in my football career.

“It is clear that, as a player, everyone in the world knows what he is. He brings a lot to the group and really is a true skipper in every way.

“He always respects others’ decisions because, despite being the captain and having been at the club for more than 15 years, his word is not greater than any other one. He respects others’ decisions and that’s how good he is – also as a person off the pitch, as a friend, he has proved a lot during all that I experienced.”

Liverpool fans might have even more to thank Gerrard for, as it seems he has had a big influence on the man that has scored 30 goals in as many appearances this season, which has helped Liverpool to within touching distance of their first league title in 24 years.

Gerrard has been credited with single-handedly winning big games for his hometown club but given the contribution of Suarez this season, whatever he said to him may have been the best thing he has ever done for his club.

Not only for this season, but for the coming seasons. With Liverpool in the Champions League, not only do they have that as an attraction, but the opportunity of playing with one of the world’s best players on current form. If Gerrard didn’t help Suarez during the summer, who knows what might have happened?
