Revealed: Barca's top 5 defensive targets - two English clubs featured

Barcelona's transfer ban has been suspended so the Catalan's need to act quickly to sign a defender. Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are featured…

Earlier this month Spanish outfit Barcelona were given a two-window ban from signing new players by FIFA due to cases involving the transfer of players under the age of 18.

However, in recent days this ban has been suspended - pending a final decision – and now the Catalan Giants need to act quickly. The upcoming window has to be seen as a key period to make big moves, considering the club may be limited in the future.

It’s no secret that the club have been panicking at the prospect of replacing former captain and long-serving centre-back Carlos Puyol. The Spaniard’s imminent retirement will leave the club needing at least one new defender.

With this in mind, here’s the clubs current options.

David Luiz

It’s no secret the Catalan giants have made signing Luiz their number one priority this summer, but the deal looked like it might not happen after the clubs transfer ban.

The Brazilian centre back had previously stated that he expects to stay at Stamford Bridge, but Jose Mourinho is willing to listen to offers for the player.

Jan Vertonghen

Belgian centre-back Jan Vertonghen could leave White Hart Lane in search of Champions League football this summer. However, expect Spurs to demand a considerable transfer free in a last ditch attempt to keep their star defender.

Thiago Silva

It is understood that Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva is ready to consider his options at the end of the season.

The Brazilian has been linked with Barca in the past and he could be the perfect man to restore the Catalan’s European prestige.

Inigo Martinez

Real Sociedad’s star is very much a player for the future. He has showcased his talents for the Spanish youth teams and on one occasion for the senior side. He is believed to be one of the best young defenders in the country and, in fact, he has previously drawn comparisons to the man he could replace, Carlos Puyol.

Mateo Musacchio

23-year-old Mateo Musacchio is having a fine season for Villarreal, and has alerted some of the world’s top names to his existence, with Barca said to be the front-runners for his signature.
