Predicted Manchester United XI to play Norwich City - Who does Giggs trust for first game in charge?

Match to be played on Saturday 26th April 2014 at 17:30. Venue: Old Trafford, Manchester.

There is going to be plenty of attention on Manchester United’s game against Norwich City this weekend as the post-David Moyes era begins.

Ryan Giggs has been given control of the first team for the rest of the season as United stare at the grim possibility of no European football next year and the fact Liverpool could take their Premier League title by the end of May.

Here’s the side Giggs could select for his first game in charge.

GK – David De Gea

This is one position that Giggs doesn’t have to think about. De Gea has been one of the only United players to show any form of consistency this season.

RB – Chris Smalling

Smalling is one of the most versatile defenders that United have but he needs to play in a settled position.

CB – Phil Jones

Jones is at his best when he plays as a centre-back. He needs to become more consistent because there have been too many poor performances spoiling the good ones this season.

CB – Nemanja Vidic

This is one of the last chances that Vidic could have to play at Old Trafford and Giggs will be looking for someone he trusts in the middle of the defence.

LB – Alexander Buttner

Buttner will keep his place at left-back if Patrice Evra hasn’t recovered from a knee problem in time to feature in this game.

RM – Antonio Valencia

Valencia has the experience to cover at right-back and the pace to really hurt Norwich from the right-hand side.

CM – Michael Carrick

Carrick just needs to do what he does best, which is sit in the midfield and make it difficult for the opposition to move the ball easily, stepping in and breaking up the play.

CM – Marouane Fellaini

Giggs could give the Belgian simple instructions to be aggressive and disruptive in the midfield before moving possession on quickly to more creative players.

AM – Juan Mata

Mata is one of the only players in the United squad who can be really creative in behind the main striker.

LM – Adnan Januzaj

Giggs may recognise that Januzaj is having a similar impact down the left to the one he did when he first got into the team. With little to play for, he could get a game.

ST – Wayne Rooney

If Rooney is fit then he’ll play, if he’s suffering the effects of a flair up in that toe injury then Javier Hernandez could step into the side instead.
