Napoli back in the hunt for Liverpool's Daniel Agger

Daniel Agger

There could be defensive comings and goings at Anfield this summer, with Liverpool looking for new blood that could free up a club legend for transfer.

There aren't many criticisms that could be levelled at Brendan Rodger's hugely entertaining Liverpool side this year.

Smashing goals in left, right and centre, they have blitzed their way to top of the Premier League and the cusp of their first league title since 1990.

However, one of the things that has made them so compelling to watch has been that however many goals they score, they are almost certain to concede enough to threaten the result.

While this may be great for the neutral fans among us, it isn't so good for the health of your average Liverpool supporter, or indeed their Northern Irish manager.

With Martin Skrtel superb all season long, the second central defensive spot has been rotated between vice-captain Daniel Agger and new signings Kolo Toure, and Mamadou Sakho. None of those three have really nailed down the position alongside the Slovakian powerhouse, leading to Rodgers to consider other promising options such as Schalke's Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Sporting's Marcos Rojo.

While Toure may be deemed expendable given his age and unpredictability, Agger is very much in demand by some of the continent's other top clubs, and having been on the radar of Barcelona a couple of years ago, it is former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez who is looking to test his old club's resolve to hold onto a player no longer deemed the main man in the Anfield defence.

The Naples outfit were linked with the Denmark captain in January's transfer window, with a swap deal for Swiss defensive midfielder Gokhan Inler mooted but ultimately failing to come off. Whether this could be revisited in the summer, or a straight cash deal being discussed to free up the money for defensive reinforcements for the Reds, the loss of Agger, who has been at the club since 2006 when Benitez brought him to England, would be tough to swallow for the Liverpool faithful.

29-year-old Agger has featured 19 times for Liverpool in the league this year, and has discussed a move to Barcelona in the past.
