Arsenal morning news: Barca want Ozil and Cleverley targeted

All the latest news and gossip from the past 24 hours at The Emirates.

Despite rumours yesterday that Arsene Wenger could leave the club should they fail in their pursuit of Champions League football and the FA Cup trophy - it is reported today that Wenger will be signing a new deal at The Emirates.

Arsenal expert John Cross has mentioned in his Mirror column this morning that the Frenchman has decided he will stay on as the Arsenal boss - and is planning a spending spree this summer to fight for the Premier League title next term.

With that in mind - plenty of reports have emerged this morning on the transfer front.

Despite reports yesterday that Arsenal look set to secure Bacary Sagna to a new long term deal it appears that the Gunners are still targeting Callum Chambers of Southampton.

The English right-back has had a breakthrough season for the club and is said to be considered as a potential first-team option when Sagna does decide to leave.

What this would mean for the future of Carl Jenkinson remains to be seen.

Wenger was recently linked with making a move for Chris Smalling at Manchester United - a rumour that has been ruled out by general consensus.

Now he is said to want another youngster at United - Tom Cleverley.

The England international has had a poor season at Old Trafford but it is believed Wenger is a fan of his style of play and is willing to use a cut of his £70 million to bring him in.

Some astonishing rumours this morning also emerging that Mesut Ozil could leave the club - with Barcelona wanting to buy him for €30 million.

The German international has had a stop-start first campaign at The Emirates - but yesterday he mentioned his future plans at Arsenal and his happiness at the club via Facebook.

Arsenal are continuing to be tentatively linked with a move for Louis Van Gaal should Wenger leave. The Dutch national team coach’s former assistant Andries Jonker is joining The Emirates this summer as academy director and Van Gaal may be asked to join him.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has a muscle injury and that is why he has been sparsely used in recent weeks.

The Daily Mail report he has a groin problem and has therefore been ‘nursed’ through the end of the season so he can make it to the World Cup with England this summer.
