Arsenal latest: Rivals tried to stop Ozil move and Podolski could return home

All the latest news and gossip from the past 24 hours at The Emirates.

It was rumoured back in September - but now the Express believe that Tottenham Hotspur did try to deliberately sabotage Arsenal’s deal for Mesut Ozil last summer.

Ozil, who is being linked with an unlikely move to Barcelona this summer, arrived for £42.4 million last September. But as Spurs sold Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for a world record fee on the same day they desperately wanted to prevent Madrid selling him to their North London rivals.

However nothing appeared to come to fruition - as he made the move to The Emirates.

Lukas Podolski would reportedly consider a move back to the Bundesliga at some point in his career - with his boyhood club FC Koln a likely destination:

"The Bundesliga is one of the best leagues in the world and therefore in principle always interesting. In the Bundesliga, my thoughts naturally turn first to Cologne. That is much more than a club for me, this is my home."

Arsenal are said to be looking at a move for Ghanaian youngster Afriyie Acquah of Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.

The player is being lined up as the potential replacement for Mikel Arteta - who has had a relatively poor season.

Sol Campbell says Arsenal need to sign world class players ahead of next season. The ex-Gunners defender has stated:

"Arsenal need some more players who are ready-made and world. With everyone fit, I think they need another three players. You have got to get to the stage where teams are frightened of you. You need options and they could do with a few more players who could frighten other teams with their playing ability. It will turn, but you need that cutting edge in your side. The board might have to put their head on the block and go for it and do not be scared…”

Emmanuel Frimpong may have struggled since his January move to Championship side Barnsley - but the ex-Gunners starlet could be on his way to the World Cup.

He has been included on Ghana’s leaked provisional squad along with the likes of Jeffrey Schlupp, Albert Adomah and Christian Atsu.
