Italian based journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed that Manchester United have already made contact with Jose Mourinho over the vacant managerial role at Old Trafford, with the Portuguese ‘thinking about it’.
If, and it’s an almighty if in so many ways, that interest in Mourinho is accurate then United should go cap in hand to Stamford Bridge and give Roman Abramovich whatever he wants in compensation for the experienced coach.
The benefits for United in signing Mourinho are endless if they manage to pull it off.
Tactically, he’s one of the best brains in the modern game and would have certainly prevented some of the embarrassing defeats which plagued David Moyes’ United side over the course of this season.
Mourinho is one the only bosses in the global game who can get the very best out of a core group of players, regardless of whether they are young and inexperienced or older and supposedly past their sell by dates.
He’d certainly get the best out of players like Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick as well as inspiring younger players with the virtually guaranteed prospect of success.
This is also a job Mourinho is reported to have desired in the past and they can trust him with the reported hundreds of millions United apparently have available to spend this summer.
He’s an inspirational figure who can also change a game with a strong presence on the sideline whether that’s through, again, his tactics or just the way he inspires his players.
He’s got a proven track record of success having won domestic titles in different countries as well as the Champions League with FC Porto, Inter Milan and he could win it again this season with the Blues.
Some of United’s performances this season have been poor, which would be easier to bear had they managed to get results at the same time. A typical trait of Mourinho’s management.
His communication skills, his leadership, his man management and the way he deals with the media all make him the perfect person for Manchester United to be looking at.
Whether Abramovich would want £10 million or £100 million, if Di Marzio is right and Mourinho is thinking about it, United have to do everything they can to appoint the man they should have appointed this time last year.
