When Arsenal were destroyed by Manchester United's tipped next boss

Louis van Gaal's Barcelona side of over a decade ago did quite a number on Arsenal once upon a time.

Louis van Gaal is a man who has done it all and won it all, and managed many of the best players in the world.

It's little wonder Manchester United are interested in his services, and that he is reported to be ready to jump at the chance to take on such a high profile position.

Van Gaal was in charge of Bayern when they knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League in 2010, thanks to a late Arjen Robben volley, but that was far from his greatest impact against an English club.

No that came back in 1999 at Wembley, when his Barcelona side ran rampant against Arsenal, beating them 4-2, with a perfect combination of pace, power and precision.

It was quite a side Barcelona had back then. Just reading through the team sheet of their attacking options now is still awe-inspiring: Rivaldo, Cocu, Guardiola, Luis Enrique, and Patrick Kluivert.

A perfect combination of Dutch, Brazilian and Spanish flair, with a certain Pep Guardiola's name standing out, with the midfielder later describing Van Gaal as an inspiration.

Early goals from Rivaldo and Luis Enrique had pushed Barcelona into an early lead, before Dennis Bergkamp pulled one back for Arsenal before half-time. Figo and Cocu extended their lead before an excellent consolation from Marc Overmars.

While from an Arsenal perspective much of the blame was pinned on playing away from Highbury, switching the tie to Wembley an unsuccessful experiment.

But it was Barcelona who really took the plaudits, and Van Gaal's masterminding of a classic away victory.

If anything this look back goes to show that the Dutchman has been doing it at the very highest level for years.

A Champions League winner with Ajax in 1995, Van Gaal has won titles with Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Don't bet against him replicating the same success should he land the coveted Manchester United hotseat.
