Ray Wilkins has urged Manchester United to bring back Rene Meulensteen until the end of the season.

Manchester United have been urged to bring back former coach Rene Meulensteen until the end of the season.

Former United midfielder Ray Wilkins told SkySports: "I've been very fortunate to work with him (at Fulham).

"He's one of the best on field coaches I have ever come seen on the training pitch.

"He was no doubt a massive loss to Manchester United. It wouldn't be be a bad shout, Rene's living in the north.

"Ryan (Giggs) has worked with him before and should get him in until the end of the season. He's the ideal guy to bring in."

Meulensteen was the former first team coach at United but found himself squeezed out when David Moyes brought across his backroom staff from Everton. He was later offered the chance to stay but declined.

The Dutchman took a manager's job at Anzhi Makhachkala which ended prematurely amid financial problems at the Russian club, before taking over a job at Fulham, where he was again axed when owner Shad Khan figuratively pressed the panic button.

Meulensteen was credited as key in convincing Robin van Persie to join the club, with his training sessions popular with all players, and seen as insightful in terms of helping the Red Devils turn narrow games into wins.

Bringing him back now can help provide a platform for next season, and bring back the feel good factor at the club.

He may be a popular choice for bookies favourite Louis van Gaal to hire, a fellow Dutchman who has a relationship with the club and friendship with his star striker. Getting him in early can aid bridge any hole at the club until Van Gaal returns from the World Cup.
