A hard-fought 1-0 win courtesy of Karim Benzema was only half the story, as Real defended for their lives to keep Bayern Munich at bay.
Iker Casillas 8/10 - The Spanish number one had few shots on goal to worry about, with much of his work being punching crosses to safety, something he did well. Made one top save from Mario Gotze to keep the visitors at bay.
Daniel Carvajal 7.5/10 - Carvajal endured a fascinating duel with Franck Ribery and David Alaba down Real's right, and more than held his own defensively with some tenacious play.
Pepe 7/10 - Was guilty of playacting on more than one occasion for the hosts, but his defensive work was committed and he was destructive when he needed to be.
Sergio Ramos 7.5/10 - Ramos was a wall for Real Madrid, aiding Fabio Coentrao whenever necessary to dispel former teammate Robben and leading the general defensive rush.
Fabio Coentrao 8/10 - So close to leaving the Bernabeu this season, the left back had an excellent game against the dangerous Robben, not diving into tackles and keeping the Dutchman from shooting positions. Also provided an excellent cross for Benzema's opener.
Xavi Alonso 8/10 - Did plenty of the tough work in the centre of midfield, yet was still a danger with his long raking passes. He and Modric has so much less of the ball than the Bayern midfield, yet when they did get it they often picked the right pass. Vital last ditch tackle on Muller at the death.
Luka Modric 8.5/10 MOTM - The former Tottenham midfielder was influential throughout the game, with his passing setting Real clear on one of their several counter attacks. Magnificent in his defensive and offensive game, and the best midfielder at the club right now.
Isco 7/10 - Had a weaker game than his fellow midfielders, and was much less involved in the action. Was booked for handball before being withdrawn in the last few minutes.
Angel Di Maria 7/10 - Di Maria had a huge chance to net a second goal, flashing over a left footed volley from just a few yards out. But the Argentine was full of tireless running, and impressed with his closing down throughout.
Cristiano Ronaldo 7.5/10 - The Ballon d'Or winner missed his own glorious opportunity to extend the Real lead, blazing over after being played through from the left. But he was a threat all night, having 4 other shots on target and playing a quality ball to begin the move that led to the game's only goal.
Karim Benzema 7.5/10 - Gave Real the lead with a simple tap in the 19th minutes and was part of a front three that offered plenty of determination and danger to the Germans.
Raphael Varane 73' 7/10 - Performed well in Pepe's absence, slotting into defence seamlessly.
Gareth Bale 74' 7/10 - Dangerous once he came on for Ronaldo, stretching the Bayern defence with his pace. Him and Ronaldo will be a real danger on the counter in the second leg.
Asier Illarremendi 82' 6/10 - More defensive minded than Isco and helped keep the visitors at bay.
