Liverpool back in for Mkhitaryan: Three questions and reaction

Heinrich Mkhitaryan

Liverpool have been linked with making a move for Henrikh Mkhitaryan once again.

Liverpool are set to receive a huge transfer budget this summer, with The Mirror speculating it could be between £60-70 million.

Player they speculate could be incoming are Derby's Will Hughes and Crystal Palace's Thomas Ince, long-term reported targets of the club. The biggest name linked is Borussia Dortmund attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The paper report: "Rodgers will also be looking for another attacking midfield threat. Last summer’s target Henrikh Mkhitaryan on the agenda, even though he snubbed the Kop to join Borussia Dortmund."

They go onto add that he and Yevhen Konoplyanka top the list of priorities.

Mkhitaryan was linked last summer when but chose to move to Germany from Shakhtar Donetsk instead of entertaining an offer from the Reds

Here are three questions arising regarding the reported renewed interest in the Armenian:

Why would the player want to leave Dortmund?

Mkhitaryan admitted earlier this year that Liverpool remained an attractive option to him, but he was happy at Dortmund. And just one year into his adventure at the club, it would surely be premature to move so soon. The attacking midfielder has nine goals and 10 assists this season, but may decide Dortmund are a still a steadier bet than Liverpool. Dortmund are Champions League regulars, and he could elect to wait and see if Liverpool can sustain their success before cutting short his stay in Germany.

Would his arrival hamper Coutinho or aid it?

If Mkhitaryan was convinced to move, it would not be to play as a back-up. Now at times this season Liverpool have looked as though they need added impetus when Coutinho has been out, but Mkhitaryan could arguably stunt the Brazilian's development by relegating him to the bench in key matches. Allowing Coutinho a rest could help prevent him from burnout, but Liverpool need to ensure he is rewarded for this season's excellent displays too, and not find himself replaced.

Who are the alternatives?

Liverpool are fortunate to have sensational Spanish attacker Suso coming back from loan, and he could compete with Coutinho for a starting spot. Alternately the club could look at attacking midfielder Remy Cabella of Montpellier or Southampton's Adam Lallana, but may find the latter over-priced.
