Costa to Chelsea, Kroos to United: Five big summer transfer sagas

Toni Kroos & Julian Baumgartlinger

With the summer transfer window just weeks away, below are the five major stories to look forward to...

1) Diego Costa to Chelsea

The Brazilian-born Spain international has been in electric form this season for Atletico Madrid, for whom he has scored a sensational 35 goals in 45 appearances. It’s no surprise that he is the most wanted striker on the planet this summer, and I would expect there to be at least three big clubs vying for his signature, if not more. Chelsea have been heavily linked in recent weeks with the striker.

2) Edinson Cavani to Chelsea

The Uruguayan is understood to be unhappy at the Parc des Princes despite only just arriving at Paris Saint-Germain last summer. The Blues are considered the favourites to sign him, given their financial muscle and desperate requirement for a world-class centre-forward, but Manchester United have also been linked with an interest in the former Napoli man.

3) David Luiz to Barcelona

Chelsea are involved yet again as manager Jose Mourinho is believed to have reservations about the defender, while Barcelona are reportedly eyeing him as a replacement for Carles Puyol. I would expect this deal to go through sooner rather than later unless the Brazilian does something uncharacteristically wild at the World Cup.

4) Julian Draxler to Arsenal

His £40 million release clause will have Europe’s elite fighting over the Schalke youngster. Arsenal were heavily linked with interest in January but couldn’t agree terms with the Bundesliga outfit, probably due to an offer below that figure. If the Gunners don’t snap him up by paying the fee, then they could be beaten out of the race by the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City or potentially a suitor from La Liga, such is the interest in him.

5) Toni Kroos to Manchester United

However, the transfer saga to beat all transfer sagas will likely be Toni Kroos who, despite the persistent and constant flood of rumours, could remain at Bayern Munich, provided the European champions offer him a bumper new contract. If they don’t, then we can sit back and enjoy the show this summer, as he will likely be offloaded to the highest bid which could come from Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, or pretty much any big club in Europe.
