It was as if it was scripted… at one end of the pitch there was a Chelsea goalkeeper, a veteran of his position, Petr Cech and, at the other end, was the home favourite, Thibaut Courtois, on loan at Atletico Madrid but owned by the Blues.
How ironic it was that, 18 minutes into Chelsea's visit of the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday evening, manager Jose Mourinho would need Courtois more than ever as Cech succumbed to injury.
The renowned international-level shot-stopper tipped a corner ball over the crossbar but Raul Garcia clattered into him (perhaps, on reflection, a result of a push by David Luiz) and fell to the floor clutching his knee. He was afforded five minutes in an attempt to recover but was not passed fit by Chelsea's medical staff. He then left the field hugging his ribs and was replaced.
The man who was brought on was Schwarzer who, at 41-years-old, has a wealth of experience yet none of that has been in Europe's premier club competition. He has also sporadically featured in the past few years.
Oh how Chelsea could have done with Courtois!
Mourinho's reaction, below, was also one of disbelief.
