After a day of rumours that quickly became untameable, David Moyes is no longer the manager of Manchester United.
Many felt the writing was on the wall months ago. And yet it seems to have been the lacklustre performance against Everton – just weeks after they went toe-to-toe with Bayern Munich twice and put Newcastle United to the sword in their finest performance of the season – that finally did for Moyes.
And so another day of rumours begins, this time not concerning his potential departure, but who will replace him.
The usual names have been thrown into the hat – some more likely than others – but Italian Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has made perhaps the boldest claim yet.
Surely the Chelsea manager is now out of their grasp. But perhaps not, with the Italian writing that “Jose is in fact thinking about United for next season.”
“Mourinho has never hidden his desire to one day manage United,” Di Marzio adds.
But would he jump ship after just a single season back at Stamford Bridge? And where would that leave his reputation with the Chelsea fans who currently worship him? In tatters, surely; which suggests the report is unlikely to become reality.
But then this is football…and stranger things have happened.
