Chelsea player ratings after parking the bus against Atletico Madrid

Chelsea return to West London having kept their sheet clean at the Vicente Calderon in Madrid.

Petr Cech - N/a

His most notable contribution came 15 minutes in when he guided a corner-ball over the crossbar only to be rattled by Raul Garcia. After five minutes of medical assessment, Cech was withdrawn and replaced by Mark Schwarzer. At first it appeared he had injured his knee, however, he left the field clutching his ribs.

Cesar Azpilicueta - 7

Showed his defensive intent by stifling Diego Costa as soon as the Brazil-born Spaniard first had a sniff of the football. Had to stay disciplined to show no forward adventure.

Gary Cahill - 8

Was aerially-dominant and rarely mis-placed a pass in the whole of the first half. Between himself and John Terry, Chelsea's centre back partnership were positionally excellent and did a fine job in protecting Schwarzer when the Australian entered the field.

John Terry - 7

Was a mid-game casualty but otherwise, like Cahill, responsible for a solid shape, nullifying Atletico's attempted attacks.

Ashley Cole - 6

If ratings were made on beard value alone, Cole would be a textbook ten… until Arda Turan shows up, then maybe a nine.

John Obi Mikel - 6.5

Ahead of Chelsea's bank of four defenders was a midfield that showed little adventure. Not only did Mourinho bring the club bus onto the field, he parked another bus in front of that one. Mikel was one of the midfield Blues to offer an abundance of protection to Chelsea's defence. Mikel retained possession well and made numerous clearances.

David Luiz - 8

Even though he parked himself ahead of the defensive line, he fulfilled the role of a utility, even making himself effective at the far post. A typically un-Brazilian performance that will have delighted his Portuguese boss. Went into the heart of defence to compensate for Terry's substitution.

Frank Lampard - 6.5

Booked and so will be suspended for the second leg at Stamford Bridge next week.

Ramires - 6

He was uncharacteristically woeful in possession, but was tackle-happy - an essential quality when a unit's primary tactic is to allow the opposition to have the ball.

Willian - 7

Was one of the few Chelsea players to have a commendable passing accuracy - 88% - but did not spend the majority of his time attacking, or in the final third.

Fernando Torres - 5

Often isolated due to a near 9-0-1 formation, Torres was infrequently on the ball (he had the fewest touches on the ball out of all those who started). Midway through the match he had a 27% pass completion rate.

Substitutions: Mark Schwarzer - 8, Andre Schurrle - N/a, Demba Ba - N/a.
