Arsenal's Monreal: Finishing fourth is a 'great objective'

Arsenal star Nacho Monreal is feeling positive about the club's prospects.

If it were not for the FA Cup Final looming, another season of 'just finishing fourth' should Arsenal close it out, may feel a little underwhelming.

In light of the club's early title challenge which wilted badly in February and March, at one point the Gunners slipped down to fifth.

Given the competitive nature of the Premier League, left-back Nacho Monreal believes it is a 'great objective' if the club are to finish in fourth.

He told Arsenal.com: "I understand that the fans can be discouraged due to the fact that we had chances to win the title at some point this season, but finishing in the top four is a great objective and if we can add up some silverware by winning the FA Cup this season’s outcome will be positive."

Fourth may be an achievement the club's players this year will be more reluctant to celebrate, but it is clearly the minimum standard required if the side are to move forward in their current guise.

He added: "People shouldn’t forget that a Premier League top-four finish is really complicated since many teams in the league have a great level."

The firing of David Moyes at Old Trafford in the past 24 hours shines further spotlight on Arsene Wenger, and what could happen if the Gunners lose to Hull City in the FA Cup Final.

If he has a fourth place finish in the bag then at that point his future will look more secure, but failing to qualify for the Champions League changes everything, and if it is stability the players want, then yes it is a solid objective - but nothing more.
