Few Manchester United players left the Goodison Park pitch on Sunday with their heads held high. In fact, as has been the case so much this season, David de Gea was arguably the only man who could say he was proud of his day's work.
But the inclusion of one United player in particular caused much debate, with Nani's latest performance coming under the microscope.
The Portuguese winger has talent in abundance. There is no doubt about that. But using it effectively is a whole other matter, with the 27-year-old only showing glimpses of what he can do when he manages to channel his undeniable skill.
Against the Toffees, Nani played for just over an hour. But as you can see from the Opta stats below, in that time he failed to play a single key pass or have even one shot on target. He also managed just one accurate cross and made 25 accurate passes - just four of which were played forward.
|Key Pass||On-target Scoring Attempt||Accurate Cross||Accurate Pass||Fwd Pass||Mins|
When you consider those figures it is no surprise United fans again questioned his inclusion ahead of the majestic Adnan Januzaj.
The young attacker may have played a lot of football this season, but the summer is just around the corner and he could surely have put in another shift despite his tender years.
Could it be that Nani was picked purely to be placed in the shop window prior to a likely summer departure? That was certainly the suggestion of some on social media during and after the game. But what did the fans make of his performance?
We took to Twitter after the match to gauge fan reaction, and as you can see from the selection below, they were not overly impressed by what they saw:
When everybody saw Nani's name on the United team-sheet, this is the performance they expected. Everybody except David Moyes.— Seb (@premleagueowl) April 20, 2014

This season hurts deeply. How can Moyes justify giving Nani a 5 year deal? Where is the United philosophy? So much dead wood. #bangaverage— Dan Cox (@DannoCox) April 20, 2014
Nani has so much technical ability but the brain is not there. If only he applied himself...— 22 (@_ARJANM) April 20, 2014
