Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has said that if his old side wins the Premier League this season, then it will be the finest victory the Premier League has ever seen.
Writing in his Daily Mirror column, Lawrenson has been full of praise for the job that Brendan Rodgers has done this season, as they currently sit five points ahead of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League – with three games to go. They meet Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday.
The Match of the Day pundit said: “Brendan Rodgers has done, this season, something that may never be done again. He has taken a team that were seventh last term and lifted them above three far better resourced teams (Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal) with much better squads to win the title.
“They have been serial thrillers, blitzing teams from the outset and leaving them so dazed and confused that they have been unable to rein the Reds in.
“For me, to have come from nowhere as they have done, really does make it the best title victory we have seen in the last 21 years.”
Lawrenson seems to have already crowned his old club as this season’s Premier League winners. Liverpool face Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday, and a win would put Liverpool on the verge of lifting the title for the first time in 24 years.
But as it stands there is still little margin for error in the final three games, though the bookies seem convinced that the Reds will have ended their long wait to be on top of English football once again - now best priced at 1/6
