Manchester United’s links with Ezequiel Garay have become even more regular following the news that Nemanja Vidic will be departing Old Trafford this summer.
The Benfica defender was strongly tipped to join United last summer, only for a rumoured deal to fail to materialise. But with the Serbian rock heading to Inter Milan, David Moyes needs a strong and experienced centre-back to replace him – and there are few out there better qualified and as readily available as Garay.
With a reported €20million release-clause, the Argentine defender is well within Moyes’ price-range and, at 27, is experienced enough (but young enough) to be a sensible signing.
But he may have to move quickly, with Portuguese newspaper O Jogo reporting that French club Monaco are “tightening their siege” of the player.
The Ligue 1 side were linked with Garay two months ago, when reports claimed Claudio Ranieri wanted to move for younger alternatives to Eric Abidal and Ricardo Carvalho. But the latest story claims Monaco are now further ahead in that pursuit.
With Ranieri’s side failing to overcome Paris Saint-Germain this season, Garay is being tipped to be one of the men in whom the faith is placed to change that. And considering the swiftness with which Monaco completed their transfer business last summer, they could yet scupper a deal that would be ideal for Moyes’ club.
United dallied in the transfer market last year, but they cannot afford to do so again, because they will not be the only club after the very players who could make them great again.
