Real Madrid have been linked with a plethora of strikers in recent months, including Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez and Radamel Falcao, as Carlo Ancelotti looks to give his front line a boost this summer - yet all of this supposed interest spells bad news for Karim Benzema.
The French international, 26, arrived at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu back in 2009 for a whopping €35m after 66 goals in just 148 games for Ligue 1 side Lyon. Signing alongside the likes of Xabi Alonso, Kaka and of course Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema was seen as the centre forward to finish off all the chances created for Los Blancos.
Yet despite bagging 110 goals in 229 games for Real, the Madrid faithful haven't quite taken to Benzema, often heckling him for his profligacy in front of goal, and some would rather Benzema was sold last summer rather than Gonzalo Higuain, who was snapped up by Napoli.
With bids for a handful of strikers rumoured, Madrid need to raise money following the £86m capture of Gareth Bale from Tottenham last summer, and it's alleged that they see selling Benzema as the way to do that - with Arsenal suggested as the primary suitors. With that in mind, here are three questions over the possible capture of Benzema...
What becomes of Olivier Giroud?
Benzema's international team mate Giroud has been hot and cold this season, and with off-field issues beginning to rear their ugly heads, Giroud has been linked with a summer exit. There would probably be a number of suitors for the former Montpellier man, and if he wants to leave should Arsenal land Benzema, then they shouldn't hesitate to replace him.
Will Wenger splash out again after landing Mesut Ozil last summer?
Arsene Wenger isn't known as a manager who likes to spend large amounts of money on a regular basis, and after forking out £42.5m for Mesut Ozil last summer, would he really splash out again this time for Benzema? The money is seemingly there at the club, and after another disappointing season, Wenger may well need to bring in another big name to keep fans appeased.
Would Benzema be interested in Arsenal?
A star in European football, Benzema will be a hot commodity if Madrid really are looking to sell him - and many of those will be in the Champions League. Arsenal are still involved in a battle with Everton for the fourth place in the Premier League, and if they don't manage to see off the Toffees, it's unlikely that the Gunners could tempt Benzema to North London.
