Liverpool have been linked with a whole host of summer arrivals, which is no surprise given that they are on the verge of a long overdue Premier League title and a return to the Champions League is just around the corner.
But few players would improve Brendan Rodgers’ side as much as the Frenchman who has been linked with a move to Anfield this weekend.
That man is Antoine Griezmann, the Real Sociedad winger-cum-forward who is believed to be on the radar of plenty of Premier League clubs, with the Reds most recently added to that list.
Griezmann is just 23, which fits Liverpool’s transfer model. If he continues his current trajectory he would have a substantial sell-on value if it ever came to that, and he occupies the position Liverpool are tipped to strengthen in the coming months – the left wing.
He is also able to play on the right flank or as a central attacker, and it is that flexibility that could see him fit seamlessly into Rodgers’ style and formation.
Expect Yevhen Konoplyanka’s name to be mentioned again this summer, despite the rumours as to why the move did not go through back in January. But Griezmann – with a reported price-tag of just £20million – is the player Liverpool should be fighting hardest for.
He already has 20 goals and five assists for Sociedad this season, plus he has Champions League experience after joining Manchester United in their group at the start of this year’s competition.
It is there where it is believed he first caught the eye of David Moyes, while Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has previously admitted he has been keeping tabs on Griezmann for some time.
But given Liverpool’s recent resurgence there may not be a better time to trump both those sides and bring the player to Anfield. And if Sociedad really are willing to listen to offers of around £20million, as is being reported, it could be the smartest move Rodgers has made in some time.
