The Toffees watched on as Arsenal beat Hull City 3-0 to go four points clear of Roberto Martinez's side, and with Manchester United coming into town, they knew that they had a tough afternoon ahead as David Moyes made his first return to Goodison Park since leaving Everton for Old Trafford last summer.
But the game was more comfortable than anticipated, as a Leighton Baines penalty and a Kevin Mirallas strike handed Martinez's men a 2-0 win, closing the gap to Arsenal back down to just one point - which makes the midweek defeat to Crystal Palace all the more frustrating.
Fans on Twitter were ecstatic to have completed the double over United this season, with many poking fun at former boss Moyes, who endured yet another miserable afternoon in the United dugout. Conversely, Everton go from strength to strength under Martinez, with supporters grateful for having the Spaniard over Moyes.
There was a notion that Everton had overachieved under Moyes, but with their success under Martinez and United's demise with the Scot at the helm, the fans seemingly believe that the club is now on the right track with the former Wigan boss in charge.

Delighted with that result. Love when Goodison is roaring like that. Loved the performance, Seamus Coleman is my hero #EFC— Jonathon (@ItsOnlyJk) April 20, 2014
