Despite Liverpool being on the cusp of a first Premier League title in 24 years, Brendan Rodgers will still be keeping a close eye on potential targets ahead of next season.
Other than arguably further strength at left-back, Liverpool will be keen to bolster their midfield options in the summer as it’s an area which lacks strength in depth.
Following the injury of Brazilian international Lucas Leiva, it left the Reds without a recognised defensive midfielder, and that role has since been taken up by skipper Steven Gerrard.
One potential target named in the press is Cruzeiro’s Brazilian midfielder Nilton, with the Reds being mightily impressed by the 26-year-old’s capabilities in the defensive midfield role.
According to Tuttosport, however, Italian giants Inter Milan are reportedly intent on stealing a march on the Reds for Nilton’s signature and claims the Nerazzurri see him as a replacement for long-standing Argentine veteran Esteban Cambiasso.
Nilton, a former Brazilian U20 international, only joined current club Cruzeiro last summer. However, it is said in the Italian press than the defensive midfielder is ready for his breakthrough move to Europe and a deal worth €5.5m will be enough to prise him away.
For a defensive midfielder, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will have also noticed Nilton’s eye for goal as he has netted seven goals in 30 appearances this season.
With Europa League semi-finalists Valencia also tracking his progress, it appears a case of now or never is just around the corner if the Merseysiders wish to add the player to their ranks ahead of next season.
