Why Mourinho won't care about United overspending on Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw and Southampton players

There are several reasons Chelsea shouldn't be bothered about missing out on Luke Shaw.

Chelsea are reportedly withdrawing from the race to sign Southampton left-back Luke Shaw.

The teenage England international has been heavily linked with a move to the Blues this season, at one point apparently telling close friends and family that he’d prefer West London over a move to Manchester.

However, David Moyes now seems to hold the advantage but Mourinho won’t mind one little bit should United overspend to land the talented defender.

He won’t mind because Chelsea have been linked with an alternative target in the form of Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno; a Spanish international and an extremely talented player for the La Liga side.

The Blues also already own several players who can do decent jobs at left-back in the first team.

Cesar Azpilicueta has been used out of position down the left by Mourinho but he’s taken to the role like a duck to water.

Azpilicueta has arguably been the best left-back in the Premier League since Mourinho switched him to that position ahead of Ashley Cole.

Chelsea also have two players out on loan at the moment who are left-backs by trade; Ryan Bertrand at Aston Villa and Patrick van Aanholt at Vitesse Arnhem.

Bertrand has made it clear that he wants to be the first choice left-back at the club next season, which suggests if Mourinho uses him, he won’t be thinking of making a high profile signing this summer.

However, 12 appearances only in the Premier League this season suggests he may struggle to command that starting place ahead of other Chelsea stars and any new signings coming in.

Van Aanholt has been a regular feature for Vitesse with 25 appearances in the Eredivisie.

He’s proven to be one of the most aggressive and attacking left-backs in Dutch football so far this season with four goals and three assists from his appearances so far, which is exactly what Mourinho will be looking for.

Chelsea have several options which means they don’t have to pay £30 million for Shaw, another example of Mourinho keeping his sensible head screwed on during his second spell at the Bridge.
