Current Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was at the centre of a bitter and broken relationship between El Clasico rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The Portuguese boss was adamant that Real Madrid had to portray the role of The Bad Guys should they wish to overcome a dominant Barcelona side, and it was the beginning of a bitter chapter in the rivalry between the two clubs.
Jose Mourinho – adorned by Chelsea fans and sectors of the English media – became an enemy not only amongst Catalans but the rest of Spain as he told Madrid’s Spanish players that friendships with Barcelona do not exist – something Mourinho later admitted in his autobiography.
The consequent Clasicos were marred by bad behaviour, playacting, cynical fouling, hostility, red cards and at one stage a famed Mourinho eye-gauge on former Barcelona boss Tito Vilanova.
Throughout Mourinho’s final campaign at the Santiago Bernabeu, his love-affair with Chelsea and the Premier League often clouded his work and a number of reported bust-ups with Madrid players all but ended his stay in the Spanish capital.
Despite moving to Chelsea and immediately rekindling his charm with the Blues supporters at Stamford Bridge, Madrid was still nursing a heavy hangover from the damage caused by the self-proclaimed Special One.
Following Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey final, however, images of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi together hinted that the relationship between the clubs is on the mend.
The duo, despite not kicking lumps out of each other whenever they meet, are renowned rivals who often share moments of awkwardness when in close proximity of each other as a result of a fractious past few years.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s heartfelt decision to console Lionel Messi after the game, therefore, hinted that the respect and thoughtfulness is there and the perceived dark cloud left from Mourinho’s stay appears finally to be disappearing.
