The Premier League title race took another major twist last night as Manchester City were held at home to Sunderland.
Following the big clash at the weekend, Manuel Pellegrini knew that his side could still move above Chelsea in the table and to within a point of Liverpool had they won both of their games in hand.
Unfortunately for the Chilean and his team, they fell at the first hurdle last night and only managed a disappointing 2-2 draw against Sunderland at the Etihad stadium, although they almost could have snatched it at the death.
The Black Cats have been a bogey side for the blue half of Manchester over the past few seasons, and Gus Poyet’s men once again gave City’s rivals a big boost in the title race.
Boss Manuel Pellegrini rued a number of missed chances for the hosts, no more so than Samir Nasri’s guilt-edged opportunity in the dying moments of the match. After the game, the former Real Madrid boss now conceded that his side are third favourites behind Liverpool and Chelsea:
“Maybe in this moment Liverpool and Chelsea have a better chance than our team, because we’re in third position, but we’ll continue fighting until the last game.” He was quoted by The Mirror.
With just a handful of matches left, Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea will now turn their attentions away from City and on to league leaders Liverpool.
The Blues are currently two points behind the Reds and as a result of an inferior goal difference, they face the likelihood scenario of travelling to Anfield knowing only victory will be enough to regain the Premier League title.
