Leeds United fans react on Twitter to Wickham brace v Manchester City

It is fair to say that Leeds fans were a mix of pleased, surprised and annoyed at Connor Wickham's performance against Manchester City last night.

Sometimes a season comes along which has the feel of make or break about it - that season appears to have come for Sunderland youngster Connor Wickham.

The talented English striker was once the most wanted teenager in the country - with Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle United all said to be keen on signing him. But the Ipswich Town striker had designs on first-team football as soon as possible - so joined Sunderland for £7 million instead back in 2011.

Since then it has been tough for the lad.

He has struggled to make a name for himself at the Stadium of Light and goals have been in short supply.

So after a barren six months at the start of the season The Black Cats decided to let him play first-team football out on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

He was superb at Hillsborough - scoring nine goals in 16 games and impressing enough for Leeds United to decide they wanted him in on loan until the end of the season.

But at Elland Road things were not so rosy.

In his five appearances at Leeds he failed to score and struggled in Brian McDermott’s system at the club.

Sunderland recalled him to cover their striker shortage at the end of last month - and last night that decision had a major effect on the Premier League title race.

After not scoring a Premier League goal since he bagged one against Bolton Wanderers in January 2013 he scored twice against Manchester City yesterday to leave Manuel Pellegrini’s side’s title chances shattered.

For Leeds fans this has obviously come as a shock. His apparent inability during his stint at the club has just been contradicted on the most public of big stages - and now he is being tasked with firing Sunderland to Premier League safety.

Something Leeds fans reacted to in mixed tones on Twitter last night and this morning.
