The versatile German middle man had been reported as one of David Moyes’ priority targets at Manchester United this summer but the Old Trafford side are now unlikely to get the chance to add him to their midfield pack.
Midfield has been a pressing area of concern for United this season with the perception that Moyes’ men still lack something in the centre despite the recent additions of Marouane Fellaini from Everton and Juan Mata from Chelsea.
Several German based midfielders have been linked with the club, including Gundogan’s BVB teammate Marco Reus and Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos, a regular on the Manchester United rumour mill.
The possibility of a swap deal that would take Shinji Kagawa back to the German giants has also been debated and discussed in the press.
Gundogan’s season this year has been a frustrating one, marred by injury which has stopped him from taking part in a disappointing domestic campaign.
He’ll take this contract extension to heart because plenty of other clubs wouldn’t have gambled on a player heading into a summer off the back of an injury hot season, which has restricted his appearances.
It’s a show of faith from Jurgen Klopp that Dortmund have impeccable patience with a player who they see as vital to their side over the next few seasons.
The actual contract offer was announced a fortnight ago by BVB chiefs so the rumour mill kept spinning when the 23-year-old didn’t instantly sign a new deal. The reason for that is unclear but it’s transpired there’s nowhere else he’d rather be planning his future and playing his football.
Here’s what Manchester United fans have made of the news via Twitter.
Gundogan signing new contract could be a blessing in disguise , owen Hargreaves all over again comes to mind #mufc— CRAGGY (@cragstaar) April 15, 2014
In fairness I never really saw MUFC's interest in Gundogan as concrete. Someone like Carvalho seems a good bet. Good relations between clubs— Alex Shaw (@AlexShawESPN) April 15, 2014
So, Ilkay Gundogan has signed a new contract with Dortmund - there goes one potential transfer down the drain.— Liam (@OffsideLiam) April 16, 2014
Gundogan signs a new contract with Dortmund, as if he would ever have gone to Man United anyway— Ross (@rds999_) April 16, 2014
Considering he's been out injured all season i couldn't see Utd signing #Gundogan this summer!— Dan Bennett (@GdanB1985) April 16, 2014
Regardless if he stays fit next season, he'd still be wanted by most top teams, and BVB would rather sell than let him walk free. #gundogan— Dizzy Corleone (@Odd_Dizzy) April 15, 2014
I hope he does a van Nistelrooy and gets back to full fitness and form. And of course we snap him up summer 2015 on the cheap #Gundogan— wes (@wesUTD) April 15, 2014
