City lost ground on Liverpool on Sunday after losing 3-2 to the Reds at Anfield, but still had a chance to get back into the title race with a win over bottom club Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium tonight - and it got off to a great start, as Fernandinho gave Manuel Pellegrini's side the lead inside two minutes.
But just as it seemed City would secure a comfortable win over Gus Poyet's struggling Black Cats, Sunderland hit back and a quick fire double from England Under 21 international Connor Wickham gave them a shock lead, and Pellegrini's men were staring at a stunning defeat.
Samir Nasri rescued a point for City as Vito Mannone fumbled his shot into the net, but a draw simply wasn't enough, as this was one of the games in hand that have been talked about for so many months, and the result leaves City six points behind leaders Liverpool, still with a game in hand to play.
City fans were understandably frustrated on Twitter, with many believing that their hopes of reclaiming the title have now gone after tonight's 2-2 draw. Some said that they didn't even deserve to win not only the game tonight but also the title, as manager Pellegrini also came in for criticism after a disappointing night.
Probably a point we didn't even deserve, worst defensive display of the season! #MCFC All up to Jose now..— Daniel Pelser (@Tigerjnr24) April 16, 2014
Worst team in the league, Sunderland, took 4 points from us this season. FOUR. #mcfc— #1 GLORYHUNTER (@RasmusOLindberg) April 16, 2014
Simple fact is we didn't deserve it this season. To much inconsistency away from home early on & performances like that #mcfc— Callum Cookson (@ManCityCal) April 16, 2014
Well done City, once again completely underrated a team from the relegation zone. Season's over. #mcfc— Phil (@OneBRBlue) April 16, 2014
