Has the recent use of Vincent Kompany shown the importance of a new defensive signing for Manchester City this summer?
Back in January, Manchester City were linked with a big-money move for FC Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala, and although the rumours came to nothing, the suggestion is they may return for the Frenchman in the summer.
Whether or not Manuel Pellegrini has his eyes on one of the most promising young centre-backs in Europe – and let’s face it, most top managers will do – something happened at the weekend that suggests City will sign at least one top quality central defender in the close-season.
Pellegrini may have said he had no regrets about playing Vincent Kompany against Liverpool, but in truth he would not have had to make that decision if he had a ready-made replacement. Be that Mangala, the long-linked Pepe, or another player of that ilk.
“He started the game because he is the captain,” the Chilean said. But he surely also started it because he is undeniably City’s best defender.
He will remain that whoever the Blues bring in next season, but Pellegrini will surely be hoping to add another player to at least challenge him for that title.
Martin Demichelis does not appear to be the answer; while Joleon Lescott is merely the back-up’s back-up at this stage and is destined to leave this summer.
The currently injured Matija Nastasic will become an outstanding defender in time, but City need another new face in that area. They proved it when playing a less than fully-fit Kompany against the Reds. But if they are prepared to spend big, that may not be a problem they experience again anytime soon.
