The image that some Manchester United fans would have been expecting and some would have dreaded has emerged.
Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has signed a new contract with the German giants, ending speculation that he could move to Old Trafford this summer.
Gundogan was a player David Moyes was reportedly keen on as he mulls over which midfield additions to make this summer as he looks to nudge his side back to a level where they can compete for the Premier League title.
It would have been a huge gamble for United to take considering the 23-year-old German has been out of action for most of this season with a back injury, which has severely restricted his participation in key matches and competitions for BVB.
The new deal takes Gundogan’s contract through to 2016 but it’s a sign of commitment which means any United bids for him this summer would be pointless.
Expect the rumours to start resurfacing at the end of the next season.
