Manchester United have missed out on signing Ilkay Gundogan for another season, with the German renewing his contract with Borussia Dortmund.
Not the spectacular name many fans will have been eyeing up, but there is reason to believe Song is a better acquisition than Gundogan would have been.
In fact here are three reasons why Song is a smarter signing...
One of the main reasons Gundogan is staying at Dortmund is down to his injury problems making him a risky buy this summer. He has not played since August thanks to a back injury, and the worry was that United would be signing another Owen Hargreaves. Alex Song has no such injury problems, and United would in all likelihood get a full season out of him.
Premier League experience
There is no guarantee how a player from abroad will adapt to the Premier League, except if they have played there successfully already. Alex Song has experience with Arsenal, playing in both central defence and central midfield, and will surely relish the chance to get stuck back in, after playing such a bit-part role at Barcelona, arguably even better for his time in Spain.
Alex Song's final season at Arsenal, which attracted Barcelona to him, saw him take on a more creative role than he had done previously, combining with Robin van Persie to devastating effect. The Dutchman's memorable volleyed winner against Everton came from a cross-field Song assist, and bringing in the Cameroon international will surely get the best out of Van Persie, and make him even happier too.
