Just 24 hours after Manchester United seemingly missed out on Ilkay Gundogan – the Borussia Dortmund midfielder agreeing a new deal with the German side – his teammate Marco Reus is back in the headlines, all be it far more encouraging ones for fans of David Moyes’ side.
The Mirror ran a story with quotes they attribute to Bayern Munich star Mario Gotze, in which he says Reus wants to move to Old Trafford.
“When I was at Borussia, Marco wanted a move to Manchester United,” Gotze is quoted as saying. “This hasn’t changed.”
It is that second sentence that United fans should get particularly excited about. Many players would no doubt have dreamed of playing for United under Sir Alex Ferguson, but if Reus still desires to play for the club despite their recent struggles in Moyes’ debut season, they could ultimately sign one of the most exciting attacking talents in Europe.
With United already being tipped to make a £65million double-swoop for Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho and Luke Shaw of Southampton, the reigning champions could be set for a summer of unprecedented expenditure.
But Reus will not come cheap – if at all. He has already scored 19 goals and provided 19 assists this season. And having seen Shinji Kagawa leave Dortmund for United in recent times, Jurgen Klopp is unlikely to sanction a move for another of his star players.
But if the latest quotes are true and that is what Reus is holding out for…it might just happen.
