Manchester United’s renowned midfield woes could be set to continue this summer as yet another target is linked with snubbingn Old Trafford in favour of another club.
The news concerns Sporting Lisbon’s highly-rated defensive midfielder William Carvalho.
The Angolan-born Portuguese international has been imperious for Sporting this season, helping the club challenge towards the top of the Primeira Liga after a poor campaign last season.
Manchester United are said to have sent scouts on a number of occasions to watch him play, and there were even reports of an alleged £37 million agreement struck between the clubs to take Carvalho to Old Trafford this summer.
Despite the rumours, a formal deal has yet to be announced and Spanish giants Real Madrid have reportedly joined the chase for his signature.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men have an abundance of midfielders in their ranks, and should they conclude a deal for the highly-rated William Carvalho, Manchester United’s Premier League rivals Arsenal could be the main benefactor.
The 22-year-old has yet to start a La Liga game for the club this season, being firmly behind the likes of Luka Modric, Xabi Alonso, Angel Di Maria, Isco and Asier Illarramendi in the pecking order but has made a few substitute appearances.
The imminent return of Sami Khedira and a potential deal for Carvalho will surely push Casimero further away from the first-team squad, boosting Arsenal’s chances of striking a deal.
With current Arsenal midfielders Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini now in their 30s, €6m rated Casimero represents a very good opportunity for Arsene Wenger to significantly boost his midfield ranks, and Carvalho may push im towards them.
