Hamburg attacking midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu – dubbed the ‘Next Ozil’ by the press – is having a fantastic season in the Bundesliga.
His comparisons with Arsenal’s record signing Mesut Ozil come from his playing style as an attacking midfielder but also because of his Turkish descent, despite being born in Germany.
The 20-year-old exciting prospect was been linked with a move to Arsenal during the January transfer window, though the Gunners were more active in their chase for Schalke star Julian Draxler.
The Gunners have since been joined by Premier League rivals Chelsea in their interest for the Turkish international, with certain sectors of the press believing he could be set for a €16m move to Jose Mourinho’s Blues this summer.
Amongst Diego Simeone’s ranks is star midfielder Arda Turan, who happens to be Hakan Calhanoglu’s international teammate – and friend – in the Turkish set-up.
The paper believes that Turan’s relationship with Calhanoglu can help convince Hamburg’s star player to move to the Spanish capital and join him at the Vicente Calderon stadium.
In what promises to be an exciting transfer saga this summer, relegation-threatened Hamburg will be the ultimate losers as Calhanoglu has been their standout player this season, notching ten goals and three assists in 24 Bundesliga starts.
