Roma plot raid for Santon or Debuchy

Roma are considering moving for one of Newcastle United pair Mathieu Debuchy and Davide Santon this summer, reports suggest.

It has been a superb season for Roma, who somewhat surprisingly are set to secure the runners-up spot in Serie A.

While Juventus' win over Udinese last night maintains an eight-point gap at the top, which appears unassailable at this stage, the Giallorossi will still be proud of their efforts.

But next season could be a tougher test with Inter and AC Milan likely to perform much better and Napoli and Fiorentina in hot pursuit of Roma.

Added to that, Roma will have a Champions League campaign to fight unlike this season and they will need greater strength in depth.

Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini is already considering his options for reinforcements and two Newcastle players are said to be options on his shopping list.

Il Messaggero reports that Sabatini is looking at former Inter defender Davide Santon and versatile French international Mathieu Debuchy.

Debuchy, who has been struggling with a groin injury of late, didn't make the best of starts to life at Newcastle but is now an important figure.

However, Newcastle are said to be resigned to losing him and there is also reported interest from French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Santon has been troubled by a recurring knee problem but remains a regular for Newcastle but has experience of Serie A and may welcome a return to his homeland where he launched his career with Inter.
