It’s nothing new for Chelsea fans to read that one of the big Catalan based newspapers have linked defensive player David Luiz with a move to the Nou Camp.
Regardless of the transfer ban, which has just been imposed on the club, Sport suggests that the current Spanish champions are prepared to go after the Brazilian again this summer as they look for a long term replacement for Carles Puyol.
Barca have already seen one offer knocked back for Luiz and if they manage to get their ban overturned, it won’t make much of a difference for a very simple reason; Jose Mourinho is turning David Luiz into a different player.
Mourinho was unwilling to use Luiz in the heart of his defence regularly throughout the first half of the season because he’s brash and takes risks.
He’s undoubtedly a talented player and someone that Chelsea are better off trying to keep rather than axing. A light bulb seems to have gone off above the Portuguese coach’s head.
Mourinho seems to have realised that not only can Luiz be a good centre back option, he has all the makings of a holding midfield player designed to get in the face of the opposition and break up the play.
Luiz has thrived since he featured in a role in front of Chelsea’s back four in the 6-0 win over Arsenal last month.
It’s a role that he’s effective in alongside Nemanja Matic and a role he seems to be enjoying.
That creates a definitive barrier in front of Chelsea’s back four, which is difficult for any side to break through as well as releasing players like Ramires to move forward and play in more advanced and attacking roles.
It’s another example of where Mourinho has been extremely clever in helping a player develop as well as reducing the chances that Barca, or any other side, could come into the equation looking to buy him.
Any move to Barcelona according to Sport would be as a straight up centre back, not a midfield men where Barca are well stocked and have been for some time.
