Manchester United were one of the sides linked with signing Angelo Ogbonna from Torino last summer, only to be beaten to his signature by Juventus.
The Italian champions swooped for the highly rated centre-back, who has nine international caps for Italy.
The move was expected to take his career to the next level, yet Ogbonna has failed to hit the heights since his £13 million switch.
The powerful 23-year-old has made just 10 Serie A starts, and two substitute appearances, forced to watch much of the season from the sidelines as Juventus move towards winning another Scudetto.
This should trigger interest from David Moyes' Manchester United, who are in need of a centre-back to replace Nemanja Vidic.
Ogbonna is a player of clear potential who despite his contract until 2018, could be tempted away, admitting while at Torino last year that he was 'flattered' by interest from the Red Devils.
Despite his struggle for game time, Ogbonna has won more aerial duels than any other defender per game (2.2), barring veteran Giorgio Chiellini, while his 1.7 interceptions per game average is only narrowly below the man keeping him out of the side, Andrea Barzagli.
United would be shrewd to act now while Ogbonna's stock is low in Turin and add him to the mix at Old Trafford.
With other Serie A clubs ready to unsettle him and call his time at Juventus into question so early, United may just find they have a great chance of bringing him aboard.
