Demba Ba is the answer Chelsea had all along, but did not realise

Chelsea's season is back on track, and they have Demba Ba to thank.

The Senegalese striker followed up his vital strike over PSG with a winner at Swansea at the weekend to keep Jose Mourinho's side in the title race.

For most of the season the forward has been kept in reserve as the club's third choice striker.

In fact his most high profile moment of the season to prior to this month was when Mourinho denied him a deadline day loan switch to Arsenal.

Now the striker is back on track, and showing why the club decided to spend £7 million on him in the first place.

Ba is a player who has never really had a fair crack at Chelsea, even last season under Rafa Benitez, he was in and out of the side, and any failure to have an immediate impact when he did play would see him consigned to the bench hoping for scraps.

Now it appears he is coming good, and at just the right time, but has he been the answer Chelsea wanted all along, right under their noses.

A look at the statistics illustrates Ba has a better minutes per goal ratio than any of his teammates in the Premier League.

  TeamPosmins / GoalsAppsMins
Fernando Torres Chelsea FW 360.50 24 1,442
André Schürrle Chelsea FW 158.71 26 1,111
Samuel Eto'o Chelsea FW 154.00 20 1,232
Demba Ba Chelsea FW 114.00 16 456

Ba is a player who scored 29 Premier League goals in one-and-a-half seasons at Newcastle, with the whole season he completed disrupted by the African Nations Cup.

That figure alone shows what Ba can be capable of given a sustained run in the first team, and with the likes of Willian, Hazard and Oscar supplying him, it's only logical that return could be increased.

For too long Ba has been ignored, with the wretched Fernando Torres blocking his opportunities.

While Samuel Eto'o remains a solid option for the Blues, putting their faith in Demba Ba for the rest of the season may prove to be the smartest decision Jose Mourinho has made regarding his strikers yet.
