Ancelotti comments suggest Chelsea move for Varane is unlikely

Varane Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti says 'Jose Mourinho' are rare words around Real Madrid these days.

Former Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has had some very big and bold statements to make about Jose Mourinho, suggesting the current Chelsea boss hasn’t been mentioned in the Real Madrid dressing room since last August.

Ancelotti and Mourinho have made no secret of the fact they are happy to take aim at each other in the press but Ancelotti’s latest comments suggest that Mourinho may struggle to sign the player he called the best young defender in the world; Raphael Varane.

“Mourinho was only spoken about in the changing room in August when we met him in a tournament. Since then, nothing,” said the Italian in an interview with AS.

A little surprising as Mourinho has only just left his job with Los Blancos but an indication that the current squad has already moved on and possible evidence that Chelsea and the Portuguese aren’t on the mind of the young Frenchman.

Mourinho is a huge admirer of Varane and would seemingly love the chance to snap him up in the future, giving him a superb centre-back pairing of Varane and Kurt Zouma if a move ever came about.

In reflection, Varane has been very respectful and positive towards Mourinho in the past, someone he credits with helping his development in a Real Madrid shirt.

“I think he is the best young central defender in the world. Already I think he's the best. A young player must be somebody who plays in the World Cup for the first time,” Mourinho told Yahoo last month.

Transfers have happened in football before where managers haven’t talked to each other and where the idea of joining a certain club hasn’t been well documented in the dressing room.

It would be counter productive for Varane to make a lot of noise towards his teammates if he does have a deep desire to play for Mourinho again, as they would naturally question his integrity and commitment.

The 21-year-old has three years left to run on his current deal from the end of the season and Ancelotti seems to have spotted the same talent that Mourinho has always raved about.

It’s difficult for Varane to break the duo of Sergio Ramos and Pepe in the heart of Ancelotti’s current defence but Real Madrid have a natural, long term vision for the Frenchman which makes it confusing for them to sell him.
