Seemingly never short of drama, Mark Clattenburg was once again the man in the middle as Liverpool took on Manchester City in a pulsating top of the table clash at Anfield.
The hosts won the game 3-2 and took one huge step towards claiming that elusive Premier League crown, though Manchester City may feel aggrieved after a number of high-profile decisions.
After booking Luis Suarez for a late challenge early in the game, Clattenburg was left with a huge decision to make as the Uruguayan visibly dived in the second half, with City players quick to tell the referee of his antics.
Fortunately for Suarez, Clattenburg waved play-on where in most cases a yellow card would have been shown.
Luis Suarez was once again causing mayhem, and this time Clattenburg felt the frustrations of the home crowd as he failed to award a penalty as Vincent Kompany bundled over the striker – again waving play-on.
With the minutes ticking down, Martin Skrtel appeared to handle the ball in the area though surprisingly no Manchester City player appealed for a spot-kick.
One last major decision was to be made ad that was the straight red card to Jordan Henderson, an action which will now rule out the English midfielder for three of Liverpool’s remaining four games.
In an eventful match with some contentious decisions, the comments surrounding Mark Clattenburg’s performance on Twitter were as varied as his big calls yesterday.

If Liverpool win the league, Clattenburg could be awarded the freedom of the City!— Manc Robbo (@Mancrobbo81) April 13, 2014
Despite what everyone says, if every referee was like clattenburg football would be a much better game #MOTD— Jesse Abbiss (@JesseAbbiss) April 13, 2014

Put it this way - if Clattenburg gets all the calls right, there is no way Liverpool win that match.— The Beautiful Groan (@beautifulgroan) April 13, 2014
does Mark Clattenburg have enough appearance to get a league medal, if the scousers win it? he has played his part, deserves one no doubt.— Ed Diggins (@ed_diggins) April 13, 2014
Mark Clattenburg doesn't give penalty for City and doesn't send off Suarez. Anfield factor certainly has big say in the title race.— John Cross (@johncrossmirror) April 13, 2014
Clattenburg had excellent game. But why do good tackles result in yellow cards when wrestling matches at corners repeatedly go unpunished?— Barry Flatman (@Barry_FlatmanST) April 13, 2014
Fair game Liverpool were good but Clattenburg was beyond ridiculous, missed a lot of big decisions and reluctant to send Suarez off— Elliot (@andyhallworth) April 13, 2014
Surprisingly good game for Clattenburg.— Daniela Alex (@hanidani) April 13, 2014

Clattenburg has made a howler there, he's even given the goal kick so he knows Sakho never touched the ball— Lee Vickers® (@leevickers85) April 13, 2014
