Arsene Wenger confirmed there will be ‘lots of tests’ over the fitness of his key players heading into the game against West Ham United tomorrow night.
There was some good news from the Frenchman, who confirmed that Jack Wilshere will return to light training this week as he looks to get back into the side before the end of the season and ahead of the World Cup.
Here’s the team Wenger could go with tomorrow.
GK – Wojciech Szczesny
The Pole was left out of the side for the FA Cup game against Wigan, which provided him with a rest and a wake up call. He should return.
RB – Bacary Sagna
The Frenchman should keep his place in the back four ahead of the game. He’s an experienced option on the right hand side.
CB – Per Mertesacker
The German will be crucial against the height and physical aggression of West Ham’s Andy Carroll.
CB – Laurent Koscielny
Don’t be surprised if he’s thrown straight back into the team if he passed the fitness test he underwent today. It will be a big boost if the Gunners get him back.
LB – Kieran Gibbs
Gibbs will start at left-back if Nacho Monreal doesn’t recover from the problem, which saw him subbed off after an hour against Wigan.
RM – Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
If the Ox is anything close to being fit then he has to play in this game. He can make things happen and his pace will be important on the counter attack.
CM – Mikel Arteta
Arteta’s experience will be key in the midfield battle against players like Mark Noble and Kevin Nolan. It’ll be a big ask for him to play again so soon but Wenger has no choice.
CM – Kim Kallstrom
Kallstrom could come into the middle of the team to pull the strings ahead of Aaron Ramsey, with the Welshman thought to be nursing a tight muscle following his return from a three month injury.
AM – Santi Cazorla
Cazorla needs to get on the ball and have a real impact on this game. With Mesut Ozil closing on a return from injury, his place could quickly be under threat.
LM – Tomas Rosicky
Rosicky is another player facing a fitness test today but he’ll stay in the team if he gets through it. He offers experience and control over possession.
ST – Olivier Giroud
There are going to be times when Arsenal need to play the ball long and utilise Giroud’s power and frame. He needs a big performance.
