At present one of Serie A's most reliable performers looks likely to have to settle for watching the World Cup on TV this summer.
Fiorentina midfielder Borja Valero continues to dazzle in Italy but the sheer depth of talent in Spain means he is still waiting for a chance to impress on the international stage.
However, his performances have reportedly been noted by Manchester United although the player's agent has stressed that links are nothing more than rumours at this stage.
The former West Brom man was on typically dynamic form at the weekend and played a crucial role in Fiorentina's 5-3 win over Hellas Verona.
Valero scored one, set one up and went close on several occasions at the Stadio Bentegodi and after the game he admitted that he hoped his efforts would be noticed by the national set-up.
"But I will keep continuing to do well for Fiorentina and hope that I can be part of the squad."
To date the 29-year-old, who was a Real Madrid youth product, has only made one senior appearance for his country in a friendly against the USA back in 2011.
