Destiny was in Courtois' favour when it decided that Atletico Madrid should play against Chelsea in the Champions League semi-finals.
The Belgian goalkeeper still belongs to the English club, but has been playing for their Spanish opponent for the last three years now. Yet is his time there coming to an end?
The usually well informed sources Bild and Sport1 have both reported that Atletico Madrid is interested in signing Schalke's goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann for next season.
25-year-old Fährmann has been the best goalkeeper in this Bundesliga season so far. Both Kicker and Weltfussball.de have him even on the third position of this season’s players ranking - just behind Bayern’s Ribery and Robben.
Nobody would have expected such a spectacular comeback from the player who couldn’t play for 18 months because of several knee injuries. Now he’s back, and in Germany there are many people who would like to see him in the German World Cup squad.
Fährmann’s contract with Schalke ends in 2015, which is why it wouldn’t be too expensive for a team to sign him. Until now he refused to extend his contract with Schalke and it seems that he could imagine to play somewhere else next season. However, he is definitely too good to go to a team like Atletico Madrid just to sit on their bench. If the Spanish team is interested in him, then this would mean that they need a new goalkeeper for their starting line-up.
Independent of the question if Fährmann in the end will join Athletico Madrid or not, it looks as if the Spanish team is currently looking for a replacement for their goalkeeper.
Chelsea’s goalkeeper Cech is exactly 10 years older than the 21-year old Belgian who therefore could play at the Stamford Bridge for a much longer time. If the Blues let him go now and stick to Cech for some time more, then it’s not clear if they will find such a talented and relatively cheap goalkeeper like Courtois again.
In case Fährmann really joins Atletico next season, they would get the services of the legitimate successor to Manuel Neuer at Schalke. Definitely not the worst option for them.
