When Chelsea snapped up Samuel Eto’o from the Anzhi Makhachkala fire-sale last summer it was a deal met with much trepidation by most Blues fans.
The Eto’o of Barcelona and Inter Milan was no more and in recent games Eto’o had looked a shadow of his former self in his time in Russia.
But Mourinho knew what the Cameroonian was capable of - and he bought him in to the club after attempts to sign Wayne Rooney failed.
In the end, it proved a wise and shrewd piece of business.
Eto’o has easily outperformed the more expensive and less effective Demba Ba and Fernando Torres - scoring 11 goals for the club this season - and three in his last four appearances.
He has also made it a habit to score in big games. A hat-trick against Manchester United, one against Arsenal, another against Spurs and a winner against Liverpool.
But we should not be surprised - that is what Samuel Eto’o does best - he scores goals.
He has a grand total of 358 goals to his name for club and country in his career - so putting the ball in the back of the net comes as second nature to him.
But what is his favourite goal?
He was up late last night and in his boredom took to Twitter for a shotgun Q&A with fans - and one intrepid follower asked him what his favourite goal in his career was.
Now Eto’o has scored some important goals.
He has scored winners against Bayern Munich, in the Coppa Italia, in the Champions League final - but for him there was just one winner.
“@BrandonCFCx: What's your favourite goal you have scored in career?” The winning goal I scored against Brazil in 2003 Confederation Cup :)— Samuel Eto'o (@setoo9) April 12, 2014
Yes it appears playing for his country means a lot to the striker. This was a special goal for a special Indomitable Lions side - who of course lost a son in this very competition after the tragic passing of Marc Vivien-Foe - which might give the strike extra potency.
If it needed any that is.
Here it is…
